Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions are sometimes necessary to protect your oral health when a tooth is damaged beyond repair. At Methuen Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we understand that the thought of having a tooth extracted can be overwhelming, but our experienced team is here to ensure that the process is as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Whether due to severe decay, infection, or crowding, our Methuen dentist is committed to providing the highest level of care throughout the extraction process.

Why a Tooth Extraction Might Be Necessary

There are several common reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. In many cases, a tooth has become too damaged from decay or infection to be restored through fillings or crowns. Advanced gum disease, known as periodontitis, is another reason for extractions, as it can weaken the bone and tissues that support your teeth. In these cases, a tooth may need to be pulled to protect the surrounding structures. Additionally, teeth may need to be extracted for orthodontic reasons, such as creating space for other teeth to move into place. Wisdom teeth, which often come in impacted or misaligned, are frequently extracted to prevent future complications.

If you’re facing any of these concerns, our Methuen dentist will thoroughly evaluate your situation and recommend the best course of action.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

At Methuen Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we prioritize your comfort during every procedure. Before the extraction begins, Dr. Sandler will gently administer a local anesthetic to numb the area, ensuring that you feel no pain. You may feel some pressure during the procedure, but it should not be painful. In most cases, tooth extractions are completed within a few minutes.

After the extraction, a small amount of bleeding is normal. Gauze will be placed over the area to help stop the bleeding, which may continue minimally for the next 24 hours. Be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions on how to change the gauze and care for the extraction site. You’ll also receive guidance on what to eat, how to clean your mouth, and what activities to avoid during the healing process.
